Course Overview
This course is suitable for students with minimal exposure to finance at the tertiary level. Finance consists of three parts – Financial Management/Corporate Finance, Investments, and Financial Institutions and Markets.
At the end of this course, you will be equipped with the necessary foundation to undertake any advanced level graduate finance courses.

HOW MINIMASTERSTM IN Business Finance WORKS

1. NBS MinimastersTM comprises four advanced business courses totaling 15 AUs
a. Three 4-AU courses, and
b. One 3-AU course
2. Each course comprises:
a. An online, self-paced component: 9 hours (for 3-AU course) or 22 hours equivalent (for 4-AU course), and
b. A 30-hour in-class instruction component, taught over two weekends (Sat & Sun), or virtual classroom, (with considerations for COVID-19 restrictions).
3. Course delivery within one month
a. First week of on-line, self-study, readings
b. First weekend of the month is 15 hours of classroom instruction
c. Next two weeks of online, self-study, quizzes, case studies
d. Third weekend of the month is 15 hours of classroom instruction with final test in the last 2.5 hours
e. Last week of the month: assignments, final test
4. Qualification
a. MiniMastersTM will only be awarded to students attaining 15 AUs with mininum CGPA 2.5 and above (subject to change depending on course requirements).
b. Students attaining 9AUs with minimum CGPA 2.5 and above will be eligible for the Graduate Certificate.
5. Admissions
a. Priority will be given to candidates who choose to complete four courses within a specific MiniMastersTM course.

Admission Requirements
• A bachelor's degree or equivalent in any field from a recognised institution.
• Recommended prior knowledge of Finance.
• Writing, speaking, and presentation ability in English.

Course: Finance Fundamentals
The objective of this course is to provide a broad understanding of key financial principles, concepts and analytical tools. The topics to be covered include the time value of money, bond and stock valuation, capital budgeting, risk and return, cost of capital, corporate financial decisions (capital structure, distribution policy and capital raising), and an introduction to options. It is a necessary first foundation course in finance.

Course: Investments

The course focuses on financial theory and empirical evidence for making sound investment decisions. Topics include portfolio theory, equilibrium models of security prices and returns, the empirical evidence of security pricing models, market efficiency, portfolio management, performance evaluation, and behavioural finance. This course and Finance Fundamentals are the two core finance courses that cover all major theories of finance. The objective of the course is to equip you with analytical tools, quantitative skills, and financial knowledge.
By the end of the course, you would have acquired a good understanding of the investment environment and the key concepts used in investments and portfolio management. Specifically, you will be able to differentiate promotional from educational financial advice, compute various forms of investment return, quantify risk, make a sound decision on asset allocation, and conduct portfolio performance evaluation.

Course: International Finance and Emerging Markets

This course aims to provide an in-depth understanding and practical tools to evaluate, finance, and manage international business. The issues and tools discussed are particularly relevant to highly open economies, such as Singapore, where companies will engage in international business. In this course, we will discuss the global financial markets that facilitate international business and explain the key economic and financial linkages among them. The topics to be covered include exchange rate determination, foreign exchange exposure and management, foreign direct investment and cross-border acquisitions, international capital budgeting, global financial crisis, the economic implications and impacts on globalisation of COVID-19.
Learning Outcomes
1. Analyse and make managerial decisions in the context of a multinational firm. Understand various kinds of risks that multi-national firms face, and how to manage them.
2. Understand foreign exchange rate behaviours, factors that may cause appreciation or depreciation of a currency and be able to employ tools to manage foreign exchange rate risks.
3. Understand the setting of various global financial markets, how they are related, and underlying conditions that may predicate a financial turmoil or crisis.

Course: Derivatives Securities and Risk Management

The objective of this course is to provide a broad understanding in derivative securities and risk management. This course covers the use and pricing of derivatives - from the basic Black-Scholes model to more advanced models and options. Two important quantitative techniques – Monte Carlo and Finite Difference Methods are also discussed. This course will also provide a fundamental understanding of time series analysis with its application in financial modelling and risk management. Quantitative risk management models such as extreme value theory and high-dimensional modelling with copulas will also be introduced. The course emphasises both mathematical derivation and economic intuition and understanding, and provides practical insights through class projects.

Participants who attain an NBS MiniMastersTM may choose to stack it towards a Full NBS Master’s programme. Upon meeting admission requirements, participants may choose the following pathway:

C+ (subjected to change for specific Master’s programme)
c.
The validity period for exemption/ credit transfer of
a course is five years from the date of award of the course as reflected in the
official result slip/transcript
d.
The course must not have been used for exemption/credit
transfer into another programme
Admission to Full NBS Master’s programme
Participants have to meet all required admission standards of the selected
Master’s programme.
Accreditation of courses completed under the NBS MiniMastersTM to a Full NBS Master’s programme will be subject to the current accreditation policy:

SkillsFuture Credit
Singapore Citizens, aged 25 and above, and self-sponsored, may use their SkillsFuture Credit to defray part of the net course fee. Funding Requirements- Participant must achieve a minimum of 75% attendance per module.- Participant must complete a written assessment on the final day of each module.
Participants do not need to contact Skillsfuture or SkillsConnect for funding prior to course registration. NTU will handle the funding paperwork for both self and company-sponsored participants. Participants will be invoiced the net amount after funding and GST.
