Class of 2020

Introducing the Nanyang PMBA Class of 2020

In July 2018, we welcomed the PMBA Class of 2020 to begin their 18-month journey with Nanyang Business School (NBS). This is the second cohort under NBS’s revamped part-time MBA, the Nanyang Professional MBA (PMBA).

Our team had the privileged yet challenging task of putting together this cohort! It comprises a diverse group of 31 talented and outstanding individuals from 14 industries such as banking and finance, energy/oil and gas, supply chain, healthcare/pharma, transport and more.

The class kicked off the programme with their orientation at NTU’s Novena Campus, the new home for the Class of 2020. Various members of NBS, including Prof Chung Lai Hong, Associate Dean of Graduate Studies; Prof Guido Gianasso, Dean of Corporate and Alumni Relations; Prof Robert Kennedy, Dean of Nanyang Business School and Prof Lewis Lim, Academic Director of the Nanyang PMBA were there personally to welcome our newest NBS family members.

“It’s important for the programme to have a home that belongs to the NTU family,” says Prof Lim. “In addition, Novena was chosen for its central location. Our participants are busy working professionals, possibly with families. Their time is precious and we want to make attending classes convenient.” Kelvin Lim, Senior Manager, PSA Corporation Ltd, says that although the alternate-weekend format was already attractive to him, the real “sweetener” was when he learnt that classes were held in a central location.

The cohort then bonded through team-building activities at Cookyn Inc. Later, they joined the Graduate Studies Participants’ Social Night where they had the opportunity to meet with participants of other MBAs and Masters programmes.

This year, female representation increased from 25% to almost 36% – a very encouraging sign for the programme! Zhang Liping, Class of 2020 participant, is currently an Energy & MMB Section Supervisor with ExxonMobil and started as an Instrumentation Engineer 5 years ago. “The PMBA will helps me build my business acumen and develop strategic insights with real-world case studies. I hope to become a female leader in a male-dominated industry, and I believe that through the programme, I can encourage more women to be leaders.” Liu Yingxin, who is a Senior Engineer by profession and the elected class representative, shares that “In order to succeed, I need to prepare myself with the necessary business and management skill sets. Although I can learn it through on the job training, an MBA is still the most accelerated and ‘integrative’ path. The unique course structure also allows me to pursue my MBA without compromising work and family commitments.”

“What qualities does NBS look for in a good PMBA candidate?” is the question we are often asked. Every individual comes from different backgrounds, skill sets and aspirations; and after getting to know them better through their essays and interviews, we found one common value they possesses: they have the desire to go beyond something bigger than themselves and their immediate circumstances to contribute significantly to their organization and the society. If this is what you believe in, we encourage you to be a part of the Nanyang PMBA programme. We have begun our search for the next cohort that will join us in July 2019 and have planned a list of exciting events in Singapore so that you can connect with us.

We look forward to receiving your application for the Class of 2021, and getting to know more about you. All the best!

Warm regards,
Nanyang PMBA Team
